I’m shocked!  I missed it by one….I thought for sure I had no life 🙂

More knitting and sewing progress coming soon.  Got to download the pictures.

Well its 11:00 pm Friday night…..and not a decent TV program to be found.  This tends to slow down my knitting since I mostly knit in front of the TV.  Its the perfect relaxing activity.

The TV is pretty much just white noise for me most of the time.  I hate the overwhelming quiet, since I am terribly skittish and startle really badly.  I completely lose myself in whatever task I am working on to the exclusion of all else, so if a sudden noise pops up I am shrieking and jumping around.  Now that really amuses my husband to no end, since he likes to sneak up on me and scare me…..one of these days he is gonna get popped one…..but he does it anyway.

So to substitute for the sweet sirens lure of the Boob Tube I am listening to music.  I am a total music aficionado and have a huge amount of music of all genres.  Tonight for some reason I am in the mood for techno and electronica dance beats.  I hadn’t really thought about it, but this is the stuff that I exercise to……if I exercise, that is.  For some reason a good beat really speeds up my knitting.  I am clicking right along to Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, Gwen Steffani, Cascada, Aqua, the Rednex, and quite a few others.   Can ya tell I’m a little eclectic.  I decided that my collection of country might not do the trick tonight.   The added benefit of music is that I can lock myself up in my office and sing along to the music to my hearts content.  I do try to spare the ears of my husband and cats since I couldn’t carry a tune even if you stuck my head in a metal bucket.    There is a reason that I was in band instead of choir.  🙂

Knitty Night

Finished Squares

Here are some pictures of my in-progress Lizard Ridge squares.  The knitting is fairly easy.  The most complicated technique thus far is wrapping and turning, which creates the ripple and gives the squares their characteristic egg-crate appearance.

The kureyon is interesting to work with…..I keep finding all sorts of grass and little bits of stuff in the yarn.  Additionally, it is also spun rather unevenly, ranging from barely twisted to so tight that it its barely the diameter of a thread.  That makes it a little challenging, but so far it has worked out fine.

Can you spot the salvage balls?

Each square is approximately 3/4 ball of Noro Kureyon.  Since there is quite a bit leftover after each square…..So I have been using the leftover yarn to make my own colorways.  The colors are a little more shocking, but sprinkled throughout the afghan they should look pretty good.

Oregon Tote   I absolutely love how this project turned out.  I got it done in time for Monday night knitting.

On Saturday I finished and felted my new Oregon Tote.  The bag turned out better than I had anticipated.  I had seen a sample knitted up at LYS and I wasn’t too happy with how sloppy and floppy it looked, so I went into the felting process knowing that I was gonna felt that sucker to a fare-thee-well.  I was pleasantly surprised at how well combining Lambs pride and Cascade 220 went.

The bag shrunk by about 40% total.  It needed approximately 1hour of felting time.  The bag was originally approx. 20″ tall including the I-cord trim. It’s now down to abour 14″ tall.  Its actually about the size of my Tide laundry detergent box….in fact I am using the detergent box to block it over.

This project was relatively simple…..The new techniques used on this project were making I-cord seprarately…for the straps (I have done I-cord borders before); also making button holes.  Both techniques were not at all challenging and went quickly.  I did have to resist the urge to change the pattern when it looked like the buttonholes weren’t going to be centered.  That was just as well, since they turned out just fine…..I just wasn’t seeing how it was working as I was actually doing it.

This pattern turned out so nicely I definitely intend to make it up again.  In other knitting news, I also ordered the Booga Bag pattern.  It’s made up out of Noro Kureyon, which I love the looks of…..then felted.  I am also currently in the process of making blocks for a Lizard Ridge Blanket.  Its featured on Knitty’s Fall 2006 pattern line up.  http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall06/PATTlizardridge.html  It is well worth a look……It’s one of the most striking blanket patterns I have ever seen.

Happy Knitting

So one of my current and much desired knitting projects is almost done.  I should really be parked in my recliner finishing it, because it’s so close to being done.  But, I have spent a solid 9 hours knitting.  It’s not a complicated project.  Just a tote bag to carry my knitting projects back and forth to  Stitch N’ Bitch nights.  I’m proud of it though.  I have gotten it pretty much done in two days.

The pattern is Knit Kits “Oregon Tote”.  I have no idea why they named it that, but oh well……it should serve my purposes.  I am knitting it up out of Lambs Pride with the body of the bag in black.  The contrasting in I-cord and handle are out of Cascade 220 in a gorgeous lime green.  I didn’t even realize it until I got it home, but the yarn matches the color scheme of my favorite hoodie.  How cool is that?  The bag will be felted when it’s done….and hopefully dry in time for Monday night Stitch and Bitch.

I have a feeling I am not going to feel much like knitting for a day or two though.  This was really a marathon session….and black yarn is just really hard to see sometimes…..especially if you have to rip something out and pick thos little stinkin’ loops back up and get them oriented correctly. 🙂  Any sewer or knitter will know what I am talking about here.

On another note. I finally found a replacement for my beloved local yarn store that is closing down.  The owner was kind enough to reccomend a new yarn shop for me.  I promptly drug my husband with me to go check it out, and am happy to report that it will definitely fill the bill.  My husband just sat in the car reading his book……but its so nice that he will chauffer me around to my various craft stores.  I know someday I will have to return the favor….

I will post pictures when my bag is done.

Well I guess this is the part where I explain exactly what it is that I’m doing here…..Well, the short answer is that I don’t really know.  A friend reccomended that I start a blog.  So I figured what the heck….I’m only young once.

I’m in my late 20’s and live in the Puget Sound region of the Pacific Northwest.  One of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, and I have traveled fairly widely.  There is just something about the smell of salt water and wet green cedar trees that can’t be beat.   The area is really perfect for so many of my passions….I consider myself to be a realistic environmentalist.  I scuba dive, I hike, bike, and commune with nature…..or at least as much as my schedule and huge lack of physical ability and physique allow me to.   I may be fat…..but that sure doesn’t discourage me.

I also have a number of more sedentary pursuits.  I am a seamstress, knitter, reader, cook, and unfortunately a TV. junkie.  I have been sewing since I was 5 years old…..mostly clothing for myself.  I competed for many years in my teens and did very well.  My main love is functional clothing and outerwear…. gore-tex and Polar Fleece galore.  I am also just starting on a new journey.   I discovered knitting!  So far I have finished a lot of projects and starting socks.  I figure that is pretty decent for someone who has only been knitting for 4 months.

I probably better wrap this up before I ramble on with my life story for another 15 paragraphs.  I accomplished what I set out to do……start a blog and launch it with a post.

Anchor’s Away……….
